Orthopaedic Surgery

Orthopaedic surgery refers to surgery involving the bones, joints, ligaments and tendons. These are the structures involved in the musculoskeletal system. Pets suffer many of the same orthopaedic conditions as humans , ranging from ligament tears and joint dislocations to fractures and spinal disease. Diagnosis of the particular problem will involve a range of imaging modalities including xrays, ct scans or mri. Treatments will often require specialised instruments and implants such as internal fixation devices ( bone plates, screws, pins etc ) or even joint replacements.

Common conditions requiring orthopaedic surgery include bone fractures, anterior cruciate ligament ruptures, luxating patellas, hip and elbow dysplasia and intervertebral disc disease.

We are able to offer a range of orthopaedic surgery options for your pet and will often arrange for a visiting surgeon to perform these procedures. For more complex cases we have a good relationship with our local specialty hospitals and can arrange prompt referral so your pet gets the best possible care in a timely manner.
